The Daily Record today announced its 2016 Leadership in Law honorees.

The top winner of this year’s Leadership in Law awards will be announced at the celebration event in conjunction with Law Day, May 5 at The Westin Annapolis. The honoree will be determined by a vote of this year’s Leadership in Law winners.

A Hagerstown man was sentenced Monday in Washington County Court to 18 months in the county detention center for his role in a series of burglaries last fall.

Richard Dalton Vanes, 20, of 17328 Diane Drive, pleaded guilty to theft between $10,000 and $100,000 before Judge M. Kenneth Long Jr., who sentenced him to 7 1/2 years in prison, suspending all but 18 months to be served locally. Vanes also was given five years of supervised probation and ordered to pay restitution of more than $14,000.

A Hagerstown man who waited until his neighbor’s dog died before breaking into her home last year was sentenced Tuesday in Washington County Circuit Court to seven years in state prison for that break-in and another burglary.

The trial of a Hagerstown man accused earlier this year of assaulting a child and causing permanent brain damage was rescheduled Thursday in Washington County Circuit Court for two days in November.

Darryl Xavier Talley Jr., 25, of 1317 Jay Drive, is charged with first-degree child abuse resulting in severe physical injury, second-degree child abuse and first- and second-degree assault in an incident that occurred on or about March 22 or 23, according to court records.

HAGERSTOWN — A 54-year-old Hagerstown man was sentenced Thursday in Washington County Circuit Court for the 2011 murder of his roommate, whose decomposing body was found days later in the West Franklin Street apartment they shared.

Judge sentenced Donald Marcus Ricketts II to 30 days in jail for failure to obey a lawful order

A Washington County Circuit jury Tuesday convicted a former Boonsboro man of failing to obey a lawful order and possession of Oxycodone, but did not have to consider whether the man committed assault when a Hagerstown police officer broke his hand on his face.

Donald Marcus Ricketts II, 23, now of Greencastle, Pa., had been charged with second-degree assault on a law-enforcement officer in a July 11, 2011, incident that occurred on the 500 block of Salem Avenue in Hagerstown.
